making AM work

Having been on both sides of the fence, affiliate marketing is dissapointing when both the merchants and affiliates don't give each other FULL SUPPORT.

Affiliate: YOU know YOUR website and visitors better than anyone. It is YOUR job to get them to CLICK the ad leading to the merchant.

Notice, it's not "the ads from the merchants".

When an affiliate, I make my own ads. Next, I get them approved and place them on my website. Usually, the ads are text with some pictures of the products.

MOST Banners DO NOT work. DON'T USE THEM!

MERCHANTS: ASK AFFILIATES WHAT THEY WANT!

Write content for them to use.
Make rich media banners.
Video ads.
Product dumps.

GIVE THEM WHAT THEY NEED TO MAKE SALES.

Most importantly, be sure the traffic the affiliates send converts. Otherwise you are screwed.

link building strategies

One of the things people forget is that the point of all this work is to get people to your site AND have those people want to come back to your site as well as tell others about your site. This is why the quality of content is king.

Once you have that quality content it's much easier to get people to link to your site because they actually see the value in your site.

When I look for other sites that I want to link to my sites, I search for the keywords I want to rank in and then try to get links from the pages or sites that actually rank in those keywords. Sometimes I'm able to get recipricals, other times I'm able to link from a comment on a blog or a forum post. This way I know that when someone searches for that keyword, they will probably land on the site that I'm liking from and hopefully continue on to my site.

Don't forget to empower your fans to link to you from their blogs, social profiles, or mention your site in a forum they belong to. Make it easy by providing the code they can cut and paste. Offer the ability to link back using a text links or small banners. Make sure you have a couple options for each. These links are like pennies, get enough of them and you'll soon have dollars.

Ask visitors to social bookmark you. These sites work on the number of times you get bookmarked, that's why adding a link by yourself doesn't work very well. I've found one of the best sites to use is StumbleUpon.

theory on Google's sandbox

Probably, the "too many links at once" filter works a bit differently than many think. Look it as "trust" in relation to the link source.

If you get a bunch of links from trusted sources in a burst, you are considered news. However, consider if all your links come from websites marked link sellers or link traders. At worst, it is flagged as spam. At best, you get slow credit. There is lots of ground covered when you get a variety of trust from your links.

Hot subjects on the political blogs bring lots of links now. You get some from "trusted" news sources, some from fora, some from bigger name blogs, and some from personal blogs. While this include many less trusted links, the extremely trusted links should trigger Google to consider your link burst a valid and important one. The trusted links to your web page raises the trust in the other links.

the deal with the Google SERPs

I'm going learning to live with the Google Dance. It doesn't seem to be within our power to influence serps any more.

The sleepless nights are getting old, so if lower traffic is the result, so be it. Of course, this means a lower lifestyle, too!

Even little things aren't making any difference. One example is this NOODP stuff. It was irritating seeing my site displayed on Google with the ODP title and description. Then, Google would have my website slide down the serps. So, I did the "noodp" stuff. Within days, it restored the proper title and description. However, it didn't make a blind bit of difference to my rankings.

My only consolation is I can genuinely say (and it's not simply sour grapes) the majority of the results above me, for my very competitive search term, are not worthy of being there. Joe Public has to see this, too. So, now I'm hoping it makes him search a bit further than halfway down the first page.

rules for software

I ask the BIG software companies to require stricter standards. This is especially so at installation

All software should do the following:

1) Give users the option to install in any directory you want.
It's surprising how much software lacks this.

2) Let users choose where in the start menu and desktop shortcuts appear.
I hate software which just adds three icons to my desktop.

3) There should be no folders other than the one where they are installed or you specify.
When Adobe Reader 7.0 was released, I was constantly deleting bloody myEbooks crap until learning how to stop it.

navigation bar myspace navigation bar myspace navigation bar myspace online now icons online now icons

4) Do not add to startup with windows automatically.
I didn't say you had permission to be resident just so you can pop-up your damn app at the slightest mouse click. Again, bloody iTunes and Adobe do this.

5) General software should not require administrator privleges to install nor run needlessly.
I'm thinking of CoD2.

myspace online now myspace online now codes extended network myspace extended myspace network myspace extended network

6) There should be no additional software installed, without consent which is not required to run the software.
See iTunes and Quicktime.

7) Any software should not change file associations, unless giving the option.
I'll tell you what needs to be opened automatically.

network extended myspace myspace music generators music generator music code generator music generators

8) There should never be more than a single entry in the Add/Remove List.

These are very basic and need to be good manners when software is concerned.

Frankly "badware" needs to include any software which is written poorly and is bloated. It uses excessive memory. This includes anything giving you a bloody skin, without an option to change back to the default. I've worked hard to keep my classic windows interface, with XP. Software, like iTunes, needs to give me the option to turn it off. I like my boring grey and want to keep it that way.

proposed changes in registrar regulations for non .com domains

To show one possible future, if PIR feels the need to clean up explicit domains from .org, it could announce a random  adult-oriented website.org (check its Alexa ranking) have its renewal price set to $1 billion/yr. If it takes 10 years, many would wait. It is not considered "suicide" for PIR.

Cool Cute Cursors Myspace cursors Glitter text Glitter graphics Contact box

Who stands against adult-oriented content? "We're protecting children on the internet from inappropriate content", PIR might argue. Letting this temptation stay in the contract likely becomes a slippery slope. This leads to profit-maximizing behavior by registries. They may emulate .tv. By acting in the interests of shareholders, registries are *required* to maximize profits.

Myspace contact box Comment box Comment box generator Falling Objects generator Falling objects

These new changes can be used as a political weapon, too. Suppose a registry disagrees with the content or views of a website, for which they are the registrar. They could raise a renewal price to $100 billion/yr. 10 years down the road, that website won't exist at that address. There is nothing in the contracts forbidding this pricing behaviour. More likely, it is used for profit maximization (if Google.com is a $100 billion company, they must "certainly gain benefit from their domain name, and can afford a $1 billion/yr renewal fee" one could say.

Look at the net neutrality debate and tiered pricing for websites, which the phone and cable companies are pushing....). How far away is tiered domain name pricing??

online aggression

If you visit places like MySpace or USENET, and pose as your victim, start saying crazy things which eventually find their way to future employers.

Or, pose as other people saying nasty things about the victim and make it sound like a large number of people hate them.

myspace hacks tiny myspace layouts Top 16 Myspace Myspace Generators myspace background codes

When you use anonymous proxies (or remailers on USENET), it makes you increasingly resistant to being discovered and punished. However, if you are, the victim still must clear their name with employers and others who don't know the "rest" of the story (such as, it's all a lie and perhaps the attacker is now in jail). The thing is, employers rather not hire people mired in that kind of drama. It doesn't matter if God tells them the truth, it only bolsters their decision not to hire the victim of such online malevolence.

This has the necessary elements to be the next wave of domestic terrorism in America. Anyone can do it, and the damage is potentially overwhelming. Besides, law enforcement is typically too slow and unconcerned with victims of this. When this wave of terrorism hits its stride, civil courts are going to be crushed by the thousands (possibly millions) of court cases. Every Tom, Dick, and Harry in the world will take advantage of what is seen as the most powerful weapon of mass defamation in history.

carburetor basics

Basically, a carburetor consists of an open pipe. There is a "barrel" or "throat" through which the air passes into the engine through the inlet manifold.

Pay It Forward Blog Source Fortune City Dramatic

The form of the pipe is a venturi. It narrows in section and widens again. This causes the airflow to increase in speed in the narrowest part. Below the venturi, there is a butterfly valve. It is called the throttle. This is a rotating disc. It has the ability to be turned end-on to the airflow, to hardly restrict the flow at all. Or, it allows rotation so it (almost) fully blocks the flow of air.

Cruise Vista Vista Files Cafe 150 Xanga Myspace

The butterfly valve controls the flow of air in and out of the carburetor throat. This allows the quantity of fuel/air mixture the system delivers. This regulates engine power and speed. Usually, the throttle is connected through a cable or mechanical linkage of rods and joints. Rarely, it is connected through a pneumatic link. This is to the accelerator pedal on cars or equivalent control of other equipment or vehicles.

The air stream has fuel introduced through small holes. These are at the most narrow part of the venturi. In response, fuel flow to a particular pressure drop in the venturi adjusts through precisely-calibrated orifices. These are called jets, in the fuel path.

controversial ebay tactics

Auction sniping, or "bid sniping", occurs when a high bid is entered in the last few seconds of an auction. The goal is to leave no time for other users to counterbid. This practice is permitted by eBay. Other auction websites, such as Yahoo! Auctions, offer the option to extend the auction once a last-minute bid is placed. This is to prevent sniping. eBay has a "proxy bidding" feature. It allows a buyer a maximum offer they are willing to pay. This is regardless of "snipes".

Analysis of "sniping" economically (Roth and Ockenfels, 2000) suggests it is rational. It is a gain-maximizing (i.e., price-minimizing) strategy. It lets auction bidders fulfill two criteria: 1) there is a rigid end time (such as eBay), and 2) it allows additional information to be gained about the "true" value of the item. This is is done by examining previous bids. For example, a novice buyer of antiques may prefer bidding in auctions with more experienced antiques buyers. The idea is the items the experienced buyer wants are more likely to be valuable. Here, more informed buyers could delay bidding until the final minutes of the auction to avoid creating bid competition.

Thrills

On first glance, some try to sell something which appears to be expensive. They start with a low starting price. Then, they inconspicuously state in the description they are bidding on an item which is not the one shown. For example, an auction displays a game console box. Bidders are lead to believe the auction is for a game console. However, in the description, the box is empty. This is not permitted by eBay. However, it is difficult to enforce after the sale has closed.

Sometimes cheap items, like envelopes, are sold at high prices. This is because it includes concert tickets, or free airline vouchers. This is to avoid violating the terms on these items. Similarly, some auction items are bootleg recordings or unauthorized. These auctions are violate eBay policy. However, they escape removal from the website by listing the item as "cover artwork" or "CD insert". Then, they include a CD as a "bonus" for bidding. Some items use leet-speak (such as "B00tleg") to subvert eBay policy.

SEO checklist

It is better to improve 'organic' rankings for targeted key phrases like 'rare red widget', rather than using paid for contextual ads. There is still competition for the phrase but the number of competing pages drops from 200,000,000 (for widget) to 10,000! This is a much more manageable number.

Organic listings are free. They are the result of a websites importance determined by the algorithms of the search engine. For Google, this forms Page Rank. It determines the position of non-sponsored pages in the SERPs. Suppose your home page is listed in Google for the search term:

Don't worry. With a few on-page additions/changes/deletions, it impacts rankings for all your pages. This improves your traffic. It's a very slow process. However, in the long-term it provides results without paying the SE's a penny.

Imagine being a potential visitor. You just got paid and want to buy a "rare red widget" which looks great in the dining room… What do you think a visitor wants from the website they find…

Well-written, interesting content is key to success on the web. It is the single most important concept. Unbelievably, many website developers still overlooked this. Everything becomes secondary to it. While it seems obvious, this simple nugget of knowledge gives you an advantage over other "rare red widget" dealers and their websites.
